HOUSTON – A Houston police officer was the victim of a violent home invasion late Thursday evening.
At around 10:30 p.m., Harris County Sheriff's Office detectives said the HPD officer heard the suspects kicking his front door.
Detectives said the person at the door was yelling, "Police! Police!"
"At that point, they kicked in the front door. The homeowner then engaged them at that time, "Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesman Thomas Gilliland said.
Gilliland said the officer was shot in the upper leg once, but was able to fire back.
The officer told deputies he thought he shot one of the two suspects before they ran away.
Neighbors who live in the Coles Crossing subdivision were very shaken up about massive police presence in their area.
"There has never been anything like this in this neighborhood for fifteen years or so," one neighbor told Local 2. " I walked outside and was surprised to see all the police activity and police tape."
The officer was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Deputies said they will be checking area hospitals for anyone who has come in overnight with a gun shot wound as they continue to look for the suspects.
The suspects are described as Hispanic males in their early 20's. One male has a thin build and black hair. The second is described as having husky build and black hair.
The suspects fled the scene in a gray-colored compact sedan.
