Five ways to protect yourself against identity theft and fraud

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – With all the personal information that is exchanged on the internet, thieves and fraudsters have more resources than ever before to take advantage of unsuspecting web users.

In the digital age, the threats of identity fraud have become more prevalent than ever before. Something as simple as a repeated password or an incomplete background check could cause you thousands of dollars.

This week, KPRC 2′s Bryce Newberry reported on an apparent instance of mass identity theft with a rental property, shedding light on the growing and adapting threat.

Based on the circumstances of that report and others like it, here are some ways you can stay informed, protect your personal information, and be proactive in monitoring your financial accounts to safeguard against identity theft:

1. If you’re renting out property, conduct thorough background checks on potential tenants, including verifying their identity.

2. If you come across suspicious activities, such as counterfeit or forged checks, report it to law enforcement immediately.

3. Regularly monitor your financial accounts and credit reports for any unauthorized activity or signs of identity theft.

4. Consider using technology tools, like the Forewarn app mentioned in the story, to research the identity, financial, and criminal records of potential clients or tenants.

5. Stay informed about the latest trends and methods used by identity thieves and take necessary precautions to protect your personal information, such as using strong and unique passwords, avoiding sharing sensitive information online, and being cautious about phishing attempts.
