Man shot during Heights home invasion; latest in series of violent crimes in area, police say

HOUSTON – A man was shot while trying to protect his girlfriend during a home invasion in the Height Thursday night. It was the latest in a series of violent crimes in the area, according to Houston police.

Police said two armed men entered through a back window of a home in the 900 block of Waverly about 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

“Those men came, in started kicking on the bedroom door, also discharging small caliber pistol rounds in through the door,” Lt. R. Willkens said.

KPRC2 Investigates talked to the female victim, who was not seriously injured.

She reported that she did not know the men who entered her apartment or exactly what they wanted.

“I’m very upset,” the woman, who asked not to be identified, said.

Her 22-year-old boyfriend was shot in the hand, He was in surgery Friday and expected to survive.

In January, just a few blocks away, in the 700 block of Allston, a man was bludgeoned to death with a hammer. A man, an El Salvador resident, is in custody for the crime.

In February, another man was killed in the 900 block of Waverly. He was found armed in the front yard. Police found a large quantity of drugs inside the home.
