HPD to offer burglary prevention services to Sunnyside residents

HOUSTON – Houston police are offering home burglary prevention services to senior citizens in Houston's Sunnyside neighborhood.  On Wednesday, residents can make an appointment for a home security evaluation with an HPD officer.

At a later date home security upgrades will be done by various businesses and groups donating their services.

"Whatever they can do to help the seniors they need to because we are pretty much overlooked," said Sunnyside resident Cathy Flowers.

Other residents like Sunnyside Gardens Civic Club leader Travis McGee said more needs to be done.

"Security upgrades do not prevent crime, it just deters it to a certain extent, it has to be a consistent visible patrol in the area to make a difference," McGee said.

HPD says this is the first of four home security initiatives being offered to residents around Houston.

"It has to be a consistent visible patrol in the area to make a difference," McGee said. "That's the biggest deterrent to crime, if they actually see police."
