H-E-B opting out of open carry law

HOUSTON – H-E-B is joining the list of businesses saying no to the new open carry law, which begins Jan. 1.

Forbes is reporting that the grocery giant will ban gun owners from openly carrying guns on H-E-B property.

“I don't like the law, period. All we're doing is inviting more crime,” said Phillip Davila.

The company says the new law upholds its existing policy, which requires customers to conceal their licensed handguns.

“Everybody has the right to feel safe in their own way,” said Kriselda Burnett.

H-E-B posted a message at the front of its 316 Texas stores. It said gun owners “may not enter this property with a handgun that is carried openly.”

“H-E-B is a family place, you have young ones, you have infants,” said Burnett.

“At a big store like this, they need to conceal in there cause you might have a lot of problems,” said Rodrick Kelly.

One group, Moms Demand Action tweeted a picture that said "Gun sense y'all" in favor of the rule.

H-E-B decision's was not against the law since it's a privately owned business.

H-E-B gave Channel 2 the following statement:

"As a retailer of alcohol, long guns and unlicensed guns are prohibited on our property under the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission rules. H-E-B maintains the same policy we have for years, only concealed licensed handguns are allowed on our property."
