Police confirm identity of missing boater found in Clear Creek

HOUSTON – Search crews have found the body of the boater who went missing in Clear Creek Sunday.

Patrick Mathews, 47, was boating with his son and one of his son's friends in League City, police said.

According to police, Patrick jumped into Clear Creek water around 6 p.m. without a life jacket for an unknown reason.

Police said he went under water, came back up, but when he went back under a second time, he never resurfaced.

A witness helped get the kids to anchor the boat and another witness was able to call police.

Sean Pourgahan was out on his boat Sunday afternoon when he got a glimpse of the panic that hit the Mathews family.

"Just two kids, one guy on a phone, another guy just waving his hands up in the air, I thought he was telling me to slow down," Pourgahan said. "(This is) pretty surprising, I had never heard anything like this happening on the creek."

Riley Mathews was actually calling for help, his father had just jumped in the water and didn't come back up.

When the 911 call came in, Pourgahan's boat launch became a rescue launch.

"I put all the cops on my boat, you know, EMS, you know, went out searching up and down here." Pourgahan said.

He says he helped search for about 6 hours last night until his boat ran out of gas. Crews didn't find Patrick's body until just before 11 this morning.

Patrick was found in the water not far from where he went missing.

It's not clear what caused Mathews to sink like he did. The family says the boat was still in motion when he jumped off.

The cause of death will be provided when the medical examiners finish an autopsy.
