County officials to seek 'construction manager at risk' for Astrodome renovation estimate

HOUSTON – The Harris County Commissioners Court voted Tuesday to seek a "construction manager at risk" for a proposed Astrodome renovation plan.

The person who fills the position is expected to help the county get a more specific cost estimate of construction. Right now, the expected cost is about $94 million to raise the floors of the Astrodome and install two levels of parking underneath.

The court voted unanimously to advertise for the position.

A vote on the construction is expected next year.

The renovation plan would allow the Astrodome to be used for festivals or conferences and officials believe the more than 550,000 square feet space has potential commercial uses as well.

Officials said 2020 is a rough estimate for the completion of the project.
