HOUSTON – The body of a man that was found burned beyond recognition in a van last year in northeast Houston was identified Friday.
The body was found the morning of Dec. 28, 2016, in the 5200 block of East Houston Road.

According to Houston police, the man’s body was discovered by firefighters who had responded to reports of a vehicle fire in the area.
Police said the man was identified as Ruben Mercado, 39.
Investigators said they have determined Mercado died from a gunshot wound.
The vehicle Mercado’s body was found in was reported stolen two days earlier.
