Big rig driver may be charged in I-10 pileup

Pearland couple died in crash

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Texas Department of Public Safety recommended a truck driver be charged with negligent homicide after a massive traffic pileup along foggy Interstate 10 in Jefferson County on Thanksgiving Day.

Vincent and Debra Leggio were killed in the accident west of Beaumont. Twenty-nine others were injured and 95 vehicles were damaged.

Richard Kerr, the driver of an 18-wheeler, plowed into the back of the Leggio's stalled SUV.

It's now up to the the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office to determine whether it will file charges.

KBMT-TV in Beaumont reported the family of the victims filed a civil suit against both the driver and the company owning the 18-wheeler.

There were 18 separate crashes on the highway, 14 were on the eastbound lanes.
