2 in custody after woman killed in hit-and-run in Spring

HOUSTON – Two suspects are in custody Friday after a woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash in the Spring area, according to deputy constables.

Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman said authorities were searching for a driver who fled into Pundt Park off Spring Creek Drive after hitting and killing a 68-year-old female bicyclist.

The constable said the woman was riding with a group of bicyclists and was hit as they were crossing an intersection.

"I always thought that one of these days I always thought that there would be an accident here," said Umberto Zarade, who lives nearby.

Authorities said the vehicle did not stop until it crashed into a wooded area near the park.

"After the striking vehicle struck the bicyclists, it ended up driving a little bit further into the park and at some point the vehicle crashed out," said Mark Herman, a Harris Co. Precinct 4 Constable.

After establishing a perimeter at the park and asking people to avoid the area, Herman said two suspects were taken into custody in the woods.

The driver, identified as Phillip Trahan, displayed signs of being intoxicated, according to Precinct 4. Trahan, 37, is charged with intoxication manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid.

The passenger, 44-year-old Angel Escobar, is charged with failure to report a felony.

"It's kind of sad that someone trying to enjoy the nature and for them not to try and stop and help here is kind of sad," said Isabel Argueta, who frequently visits the park.
