2 teens accused in shooting death of 14-year-old during attempted carjacking

HOUSTON – A 17-year-old has been charged in connection with the death of a 14-year-old after an attempted carjacking in north Harris County.

Valentine Aleman, 17, was charged with capital murder after deputies said he shot and killed another teen Sunday.

According to prosecutors, the victim, 14, and his 16-year-old brother were traveling in their pickup truck when they started to have some car trouble, so they pulled over on Raymac Street.

Prosecutors said that is when Aleman and another person approached the duo, got into and demanded the truck. At some point during the carjacking, Aleman fired a shot, which hit the 14-year-old in the chest and Aleman fled on foot, according to court documents.

The 14-year-old was killed.

Court documents show that while authorities were working another nearby scene, another call came in for a shooting near the carjacking scene, where they found a 16-year-old suspect who had been shot in the arm.

While authorities were investigating the shooting, deputies said Aleman’s stepfather approached deputies and told them that his son had been with the 16-year-old suspect at the time of the shooting.

According to court documents, Aleman had returned home and was confronted by the 16-year-old suspect’s mother, who accused Aleman of being with her son when he was shot.

His stepfather brought Aleman back to the scene, where Aleman was detained, prosecutors said.

The stepfather later contacted police again saying he had found a pistol in the bathroom. Authorities found the weapon and bullets were consistent with evidence found in the pickup truck.

Authorities put together a photo lineup and the 16-year-old brother was able to positively identify the 16-year-old suspect who was shot, prosecutors said.

Authorities said Aleman likely shot him by accident.

That 16-year-old suspect initially told authorities he had been shot for no reason, but later admitted to having been with Aleman and getting into the brothers’ truck with the intent of robbing them, prosecutors said.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the 16-year-old suspect has also been charged with capital murder.

Aleman is being held without bond.
