DEER PARK, Texas – Various school districts in the vicinity of the Intercontinental Terminals Company have made the decision to resume classes Monday, seven days after a fire broke out at the chemical holding facility.
It has been a weeklong battle for first responders and other officials to keep the fire, fumes and chemical spills under control.
Now, school districts have evaluated health and safety risks for students and their communities as a new week approaches.
Parent and teacher, Stephanie Bounds, said that she and others in the community have had to play the waiting game as more information is released about the timeline of the cleanup and how this impacts schools and families.
“It been a lot of late nights, early mornings not knowing what is happening and not knowing what is going,” Bounds said.
As of Sunday afternoon, Deer Park Independent School District, which is less than a mile away from ITC, announced that classes will resume Monday.
Schools that will hold class Monday are:
- Deer Park ISD
- Galena Park ISD
- Goose Creek ISD
- La Porte ISD
- Pasadena ISD
- All San Jacinto College campuses
