Man accused of dousing wife with lighter fluid, trying to burn her alive

HOUSTON – A man is accused of pouring lighter fluid on his wife Tuesday and then trying to set her on fire while they were fighting, police said.

Houston police said Paul Carter’s wife arrived at a nightclub where she was meeting him and saw him walk into the bar with another woman. She left the club and went back to the couple’s Paula Street home.

Police said that when Carter arrived at the home about 12:40 a.m., he began beating his wife. She grabbed a knife, stabbed him in the stomach and ran outside, police said.

Carter chased his wife down the street, doused her with lighter fluid and then tried to set her on fire with a lighter, police said.

Investigators said Carter then when back to the home and attacked another woman who lives there.

Carter was taken to a hospital to be treated for wounds that did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.

Police said Carter will be charged with aggravated assault of a family member and assault with bodily injury of a family member.

The wife will not be charged, police said.

Carter’s mugshot was not immediately released.
