HOUSTON – Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, a Republican, will face Democrat Mike Collier in November's general election after each won their party's primary on Tuesday night.
"Its not that they are following my agenda, I'm representing their agenda," Patrick said to a crowd at Hotel Zaza in west Houston. "The truth is Republican conservative values and principles are standing strong."
Patrick beat out Scott Milder.
Patrick issued the following statement after his win:
“This is a great night for the people of Texas. The victories we are seeing tonight demonstrate that without a doubt, when it comes to liberty and freedom, border security, property tax relief, protection of the second amendment, protecting life and religious liberties, Texans won’t back down.
“There have been great victories across the state — the re-election of some great senators — and two new Republicans are well on their way to joining their fellow conservatives in the Texas Senate. The GOP platform planks also confirm what we knew all along — the conservative majority supports our conservative legislative agenda.”
On the Democratic side, oil exec and accountant Mike Collier beat Michael Cooper to grab the party's nomination.
Collier posted the following message on his Facebook page after the win:
"I am Texas Proud tonight to officially be the Democratic nominee for Lt. Governor. Tonight, I would like to thank every one of my supporters across the state that came out and voted not just for me, but for the values we are fighting for together. I would like to personally thank Michael Cooper for running a great race. We now begin the fight against Dan Patrick for our state's shared future, and I need your help."
