Water main break causes ice hazard on northwest Houston road

HOUSTON – A water main break on Thursday shot water some 30 feet in the air and onto a bridge in northwest Houston.

With it being only 28 degrees Thursday morning, the water on a bridge in the 5800 block of Hollister Street caused an ice hazard for drivers.

Houston Public Works and police shut off the water main and closed the road around 7 a.m. as they investigated the cause of the break.

Officials said it appeared that an air valve that is connected to the water main broke, causing the water to spew. They said it appears the cold caused the break.

Crews spread gravel on the road and sidewalk before reopening the road. Drivers seemed to be getting through the area with little trouble.
