HOUSTON – With just days to go until Christmas, Kayla Wolfe, a hardworking, single mother, played on a children's slide with her two children, Raven and Zyon.
But behind all the smiles, Kayla’s life has been on one giant slide over the past year and a half.
“I’ve struggled in the past but it’s never been this bad,” Kayla said.
It all started last year, when a drunken driver plowed into Kayla’s 2001 Pontiac Grand Am and totaled it.
Suddenly, Kayla had no way to get to her job, which is located 50 miles away from her home.
“I couldn’t get to work, so I no longer had a job, after being with the company for two years. I was heartbroken. I mean, I have two kids to support,” Kayla said.
Kayla was out of work for six months, and just as she found a new job, more heartbreak hit.
Without any warning, Kayla’s big sister and best friend, Ashley, was stricken with massive liver failure and died.
“She was my everything, my go-to. She was my life,” Kayla said.
Heartbroken and drowning in grief over the loss of her sister, Kayla suffered a miscarriage.
Now, months later, the only sign of Christmas at Kayla’s house is a small Christmas tree with nothing underneath it.
So, without telling her daughter, Kayla’s mother wrote to Spencer Solves It.
“I would like for her to have a Merry Christmas. I would like for the children to have gifts and I would like for her to not have to struggle, just this once,” Brenda Padgett wrote.
Now, with help Randy Hartley, a member of Bill’s Brigade, we have a huge surprise for Kayla.
Randy presented Kayla with two Visa gift cards totaling $1,000.
“Thank you. Thank you so much,” Kayla said.
Finally, a woman who has endured a horrific year of pain and loss has some joy.
