US Rep. Green plans bill aimed at stopping presidential self-pardons

HOUSTON – U.S. Rep. Al Green, D-Houston, said Monday he plans to introduce legislation to prevent presidents from issuing pardons for themselves.

Green has been critical of President Donald Trump, and he has called for the impeachment of the president.

While that investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election continues, there has been recent discussion about whether the president would be able to pardon himself if he was found to have committed a crime.

Green said that the planned bill is not directly related to Trump, but he believes it should apply to him. He said love for his country has compelled him to file the legislation.
