Woman who claims she bought maggot-filled candy bar sues Walmart
HOUSTON – A woman in Houston is suing Walmart after she said she unwrapped a maggot-filled candy bar purchased from one of its locations.
The woman wants Walmart to pay $1 million after she said she bought an Almond Joy filled with Maggots from a Walmart on Rowlett near the Gulf Freeway.
The woman's attorney, Carl Gordon, said she purchased the candy bar in October 2016 and made the discovery as she drove away from the store.
"When she opened her car door to try to escape the maggots and insects that were falling out of the candy bar wrapper, she injured her ankle and finger," Gordon said.
Gordon said the woman ran back inside the store to talk with the manager.
"The trauma of the situation started to overwhelm her (to) where she began to have shortness of breath and started to have a panic attack," Gordon said. "On one end, you have the psychological damage. On the other end, she has to go through pain management for her injuries."
Now, the woman's lawsuit seeks more than $1 million in damages.
A spokesperson for Walmart said, "We take this matter and product safety seriously, and when we learned of this, we immediately reported it to our supplier, Hershey. We have not been served and have not had an opportunity to review the allegations."
Gordon said they are considering adding the Hershey company to the lawsuit.
