BAYTOWN, Texas – A man and a woman have been charged with endangering a child after police said they left their children in a car while they shopped at a Baytown store.

Police said officers were called at 7:43 p.m. Tuesday to a Ross Dress For Less store in the 4500 block of Garth Road for a welfare check on two small children unattended in a vehicle.

Officers said they found the children, ages 7 and 3, locked in the vehicle with all but one window shut.

One window was open enough for the officers to open the door and remove the children who they said were sweating from the heat.

Officers said 29-year-old Cristina Enriquez left the store while police were with the children and claimed to be their mother. Police said she told them that she left the children in the car while she ran to the restroom. At the same time, Omar Silva, 32, approached the scene holding shopping bags from Ross.

Officers said they determined that the parents were in the store for approximately 30 minutes while the children were alone in the vehicle.

Police said the parents were taken to Baytown Jail and charged with endangering a child.

Enriquez and Silva have been released on $2,000 bonds.

The children were taken to family members.
