Crews race to finish Midtown Park before Super Bowl

HOUSTON – Crews are racing to finish construction on the new Midtown Park, which is expected to debut this Saturday during a Super Bowl event.

“The past month, they've really been busting it, said James Galvan, owner of Wheeler Watch Clinic, which sits across the street from the new park. “I didn't think they were going to finish in time for the Super Bowl but they've done a good job."

The Midtown Development Authority has been working on converting the three-acre vacant lot into a green space for concerts and recreation.

Wednesday morning, dozens of construction workers hustled to finish the project.

A spokesperson for the Midtown Development Authority said only a portion of the park will be open this Saturday.

The group’s CEO was not taking interviews but said in a statement, “Super Bowl weekend presents a perfect opportunity to offer the public a glimpse into Midtown Park, an urban destination for all to enjoy. After the event, construction will proceed and the park will open later this year."

Nearby restaurants and businesses say they’re hoping that in the long term, the new addition will bring more foot traffic.

“Maybe people will get some sandwiches and drinks,” said Nga Chung.

"Hopefully, it will bring some people down here to enjoy the park; it will be a nice park for the neighborhood,” another person said.

Saturday’s Midtown Park Super Block Party starts at 10 a.m. at Main and McGowen. There will also be a three-day concert series at Bagby Park at 415 Gray St.
