Woman killed in shooting at NE Houston apartments

HOUSTON – A woman was killed Thursday afternoon following two separate shootings at a northeast Houston apartment complex.

Homicide investigators said the shootings took place at the Crofton Place Apartments in the 9500 block of Crofton Street. In one of the buildings, police said a woman fired a gun around 1 p.m. because she thought someone was trying to break into her apartment.

The woman called 911 and said several men were outside her door, trying to break inside. Investigators said she told the dispatcher the men had been at the residence before, and they wanted to use her apartment to sell drugs.

"She felt like they were coming into her apartment, so she fired one shot through the apartment to scare them," LaTonia Bailey of HPD said. "Then two minutes later, that's when (a second) shooting dropped, and (a) female is shot."

The victim, identified as 27-year-old Marissa De'Sha White, was standing in the parking area separating the two buildings, investigators said. Police said White was shot in the head just before an officer was arriving in response to the first 911 call.

White was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Homicide investigators said they believe several men were involved in the woman's death, but they aren't sure if the same men were responsible for the first incident.
