Local students celebrate National College Signing Day

HOUSTON – Three hundred high school seniors with the Houston Independent School District gathered at Austin High School Tuesday to celebrate their academic paths to success.

The students celebrated National College Signing Day -- a day meant to celebrate academic commitments to college in similar fashion to how student athletes are honored.

"Right now Dartmouth has me wait-listed,” senior Joshua Puente said. “If they tell me yes, I'm all theirs. So go (Big) Green! I'm hoping they say 'yes.'"

Puente was one of many students sporting his future college’s colors.

The gathering was part of first lady Michelle Obama’s “Better Make Room” initiative, and the day was celebrated at 500 schools across the country.

"It's exciting because, I mean, I'm one of the first ones that is going to finish college,” Mireya Ortiz said.
