Man shot to death inside apartment; shooter on the loose, police say

HOUSTON – Police are searching for a man they say forced his way into another man's apartment and shot him to death Monday.

It happened in The Reserve complex on in the 2500 block of Old Farm Road in west Houston.

Police were told a man came to apartment 1717 Monday morning around 10 and forced his way inside. There was a brief argument, then gunfire.

The gunman fled on foot setting off a two-hour-long search along nearby Buffalo Bayou by police on the ground and in the air, but the shooter got away.

Kevin Edwards identified the victim as his brother, 20-year-old Jaylynn Vaughn. He said Vaughn, a dancer and choreographer, lived there with his girlfriend and was preparing to move to Oklahoma. Edwards said a homicide officer told him police aren't sure of a motive.

"Maybe he was in the wrong spot at the wrong time, maybe her ex came over there and shot him around this time in the morning. It was like we don't know anybody else, so we trying to figure out why he would even be shot period," Edwards said.

The gunfire brought residents out of their homes this morning. Resident Kevin Jozwiak arrived home from work later to find the parking lot full of police cars.

"But this is very disconcerting that this is happening at what I thought was a great apartment complex. It is very disconcerting. I almost want to move out of here now," Jozwiak said.

The man police were searching for this morning is described as having dreadlocks, and last seen wearing a black sweater and dark pants.

Houston police simply aren't talking, so it's not clear if they know more about a possible motive or the name of a suspect. They're in the process of taking statements from two witnesses.
