The 2022-23 school year has further proven what a juggernaut the Houston Episcopal athletics program is in the Southwest Preparatory Conference.

The John Cooper School boys’ tennis team won the Southwest Preparatory Conference title this weekend along with their brother-sister pole vaulting combo. The Dragons dominated in tennis, beating Greenhill in the opening match, then Kinkaid in the semis. JCS blanked St. Mark's 5-0 in the finals to take the title.

The No. 1 team in the Southwest Preparatory Conference, Houston Christian Basketball has capped off an incredible winter season with an SPC 4A Championship -- making a total of three for the program.

With so many new faces on the roster coming into this season, Episcopal softball coach Caitlyn Cain thought 2022 might be a rebuilding year, even after four straight championships.

Halfway through this season, Episcopal senior Camille Walker introduced a battle cry to her softball teammates.

There's no girls wrestling program at the private school level in state, so Episcopal's Thalia Vogelsang competed with the guys - and medaled while doing so.

Kinkaid, like the rest of the Southwest Preparatory Conference teams, just played a seven-game schedule in 2020 and did not play for a traditional SPC Championship.

The defending Southwest Preparatory Conference champs are the Kinkaid Falcons. While they are talented on the field, they might even be more talented in the classroom. Kinkaid has a pair of crafty pitchers in lefties Chase Pelter (TCU) and David Shaw (Rice). The Falcons have won three SPC titles overall and two in the last five years. The John Cooper School girls basketball team went 7-1 in conference play to capture the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) South Zone Championship, the best finish in school history. This season, the SPC restricted travel due to the pandemic, limiting competitions to South and North zones. I know it was important to our team to finish out the season winning our final two games," said BJ Feuerhelm, Head Coach for the Dragon girls basketball program said. HOUSTON - The John Cooper School just had a season for the books. The women's basketball team went an impressive 15-2 overall and 7-1 in Southwest Preparatory Conference play, which was good enough to claim the 2020 SPC South Zone Championship. The Dragons were led by seniors Aalyssa Rogers (13.3 ppg/ 9.1 apg), Ajailah Ogiemwonyi (17.4 ppg/9.9 rpg) and sophomore Jorynn Ross (16.2 ppg/14.1 rpg). The private school world has been thrown for a loop with the COVID pandemic. Even more than the public school sector. The Southwest Preparatory Conference will not have a state-wide title as the North Division decided against playing. TAPPS and SPC-South have had to juggle schedules from playing each other to other public schools. St. Pius X4.

During a webinar on Friday, TAPPS announced that no scrimmages, games, contests or tournaments can be held between August 3 and September 7. Originally, the TAPPS calendar had practice for football, volleyball and fall soccer set for August 3; first volleyball games for August 10 and football for August 27. Those start dates are now off the table. During the week of September 21, TAPPS football programs can hold one scrimmage. Those dates have been shifted to November 2 (first day of practice), November 9 (first day of scrimmages) and November 12 (first day of games).

Those are the range of emotions volleyball coaches are feeling day-in and day-out as the number of days between now and the tentative start of the 2020 volleyball season gets smaller. The current start of 2020 volleyball tryouts still stand as August 3. But it is understood that the "normal" start to the season may not be the same for 2020. So, the biggest question is how do we safely start volleyball on time? Club volleyball teams have been doing personal training this summer and have recently been doing tryouts for the 2020-2021 teams.
