Yesterday, Mayor Sylvester Turner, Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia, and Reliant kicked off their 16th annual Beat the Heat Program for 2021. Reliant has donated $70,000 to the Beat the Heat Program for the Houston Health Departmentโs Area Agency on Aging to continue offering portable air conditioners to qualifying individuals.
How a faulty smart thermostat caused huge electric bills for one customer
HOUSTON โ Smart appliances and thermostats are supposed to help users save money because you can adjust and control devices even when youโre not at home. But one Houston woman says her smart thermostat cost her thousands of dollars in sky-high electric bills. What happenedโI would never have dreamed that it was my thermostat,โ Nichole Medrano told consumer expert Amy Davis. When Medrano moved into her apartment 3 years ago, she hired Vivint Security to install cameras, a smart doorbell and a smart thermostat. A Reliant representative told us the thermostat was communicating with the furnace and turning it on every 15 minutes.

HOUSTON โ Throughout the month of March, the Houston Rockets and the Rockets Womenโs Organization are partnering up with Reliant for the fifth annual โHTX Reads Book Drive,โ benefiting the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation. In addition to donating money or books, Houstonians are encouraged to celebrate National Read Aloud Month by making reading with their children a daily habit and using #HTXReads when sharing photos on social media. High School Football Grants Across Houston | More than a Game
Reliant, the Texans and the Houston Touchdown Club are teaming up to give $25,000 in grant assistance to Greater Houston area high school football programs. Each school will receive a grant that is worth $3,500. The grant will consist of PPE, Footballs, Athletic Training Supplies, and additional funs for the other needs of each respective program. KPRC 2 has launched the Stronger Houston, a series of reports that started this week focusing on how the inequities impact those who live in the Houston area. This week, the focus is on the disparity in the way COVID-19 impacts the communities of Gulfton and Bellaire. Nonprofit organizations around the community are figuring out a way to pivot to operate to continue to make a difference where its most important, said Reliant President Elizabeth Killinger.
