Texas Winter Storm: Reliant dispels consumer myths

HOUSTON – Following February’s winter storm, many Texans had plenty to worry about including concerns in electricity rates rising.

Reliant’s retail innovation and customer experience VP, Scott Burns, debunks common consumer myths and helps put your mind at ease.

MYTH #1: Electricity rates are going to skyrocket

Reliant has been and is continuing to reassure all residential customers on term contracts or month-to-month electricity plans they were not exposed to the wholesale electricity price swings that occurred during the winter storm. Customers can also rest assured that they were not charged for power they did not use during the recent outages.

MYTH #2: Energy providers are going to pass through costs to residential customers to make up for soaring wholesale prices.

Customers who have chosen term electricity plans are protected from increases in their energy costs for the duration of their contract. Reliant does not have plans to change prices for their month-to-month customers at this time. Over time, prices for plans reflect prices on the wholesale market, but wholesale market prices have returned to levels seen prior to the winter storm and are actually a bit below normal.

MYTH #3: Now’s a bad time to enroll or renew my plan because wholesale pricing is high.

Spring and fall are typically great times to enroll in a new plan, and this year is no different. Warm weather can and typically does have an impact on electricity bills for the same reason discussed earlier - higher usage. So for customers who are not already on a fixed-rate contract, now is an ideal time to sign up for one.
