Raising awareness for pet adoption agencies is something they are both passionate about. Upton also explained how the need for pet adoption has grown since Hurricane Harvey. Verlander has another passion, helping veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, and he and Upton were able to combine that with her work with dogs. All the proceeds from this go to train dogs for veterans with PTSD,” he said.

The shelter had reached its maximum capacity of 350, but had more than 450 pets in their care. The removed dogs were transported to an animal rescue shelter in Macomb, Michigan, on Saturday morning. The dogs that were chosen to be removed were larger breeds, which officials say are harder to adopt out. Volunteers and Montgomery County Animal Shelter staff both loaded the pets safely to the emergency bus bound to Michigan, where they will be able to find a loving home.

Eighteen fox terriers join the crowded kennels at the shelter. Director of Harris County Veterinary Public Health Dr. Michael White said, "From what I understand, this was a group of breeding animals and the owner can't care for them and their only option was to turn them into the shelter." Officers began investigating 100 Grace Lane and 111 Grace Lane after a bite case involving a dog was reported. HHS said many of the dogs were confined to kennels covered in filth and feces, and their environment was so deplorable it was hazardous to their health. The canines are suffering from medical conditions including tumors, skin diseases and eye traumas. All the dogs are with the HHS and are being evaluated and treated by a veterinary medical team.

The Houston Humane Society says 20 dogs and seven rats are available for adoption starting Thursday, and will have a special card on their kennel to let adopters know they were recently rescued. The ball python was sent to a reptile rescue. To adopt, please visit the Houston Humane Society at 14700 Almeda Road.
