18 dogs dropped off at Harris County shelter, 20 more expected

HOUSTON – Someone dropped off nearly 20 dogs Thursday at the Harris County animal shelter and planned to drop off another 20 Friday.

Eighteen fox terriers join the crowded kennels at the shelter.  Someone dropped them off Thursday afternoon. Director of Harris County Veterinary Public Health Dr. Michael White said, "From what I understand, this was a group of breeding animals and the owner can't care for them and their only option was to turn them into the shelter."

He said the fox terriers are about 12 to 15 years old.  He said that is not the age a lot of people look for when adopting a dog. White added, "It is extremely heartbreaking because I see these little guys.  They're old.  It's harder to find an adopter that is willing to take an older animal.  And the likelihood of them getting out of here without some people stepping up is pretty low."

He said these and other animals are available for adoption at the shelter at 612 Canino Road. The shelter opens Friday afternoon for adoptions at 1 p.m. He said the dogs must be spayed or neutered before adoption.
