2nd Annual Dia De Los Muertos parade removed from event due to World Series Game 6; Festival to go on as planned, organizers say
Organizers of the 2nd annual Day of the Dead festival were forced to remove the parade portion of their event due to the World Series making a return to Houston on Saturday.

The smell of hot chocolate and pan de muerto โ or Mexican sweet bread โ filled the air at Dvorak Park Wednesday afternoon as hundreds gathered for a celebration of Day of the Dead. Rooted in Mexican tradition, Dia de los Muertos is an occasion for anything but sorrow. Instead, it is a joyous day meant to celebrate and honor the lives of those who have died. After School Matters and SGA Youth and Family Services organized the event, the 43rd of its kind and the first one in person since 2019, in which art was displayed and ofrendas โ or altars โ were erected. People lined up for tacos and face painting, while children ran around. Some people were there for the activities, some were there for remembrance. But all of them shared one thing: a celebration of life.

McALLEN โ Quinta Mazatlรกnโs Halloween Party in the Park attracted the trailโs biggest turnout yet with over 1,300 guests Saturday. Aside from the Halloween Party, Quinta Mazatlรกn also invited its guests to walk the Sticks and Bones trail to see over 30 exhibits which were decorated with Chicano-inspired art from local artists. The art and cultural aspects of the event helped draw the biggest crown Quinta Mazatlรกn has ever seen, according to Victor De Leon, environmental education supervisor for Quinta Mazatlรกn. Lynette Castillo, an environmental educator at Quinta Mazatlรกn, said she created different crafts to represent the vertebrae to the children with Q-tips. Lynette said they replicated dinosaur bones, bones in the human hand and even got to decorate their own sugar skull at the end of her presentation.

HOUSTON โ The Day of the Dead (el Dรญa de los Muertos), is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration. Arnaldo Richards Picos is doing just that with decorated altars, cocktails and traditional food including the bread of the dead. Another great tradition many take part in during the Holiday celebrated November 1st and 2nd is painted their faces in skull designs. They do this to represent a deceased loved one or an expression of themselves. One local makeup artist, Edward Sanchez has been doing this for years and has a wide range of designs for people to get creative with.

Barbie unveils second Da de Muertos collectible doll
Barbie lovers, you might want to add this to your growing collection. The second edition of a collectible Da de Muertos doll that celebrates a time-honored Mexican tradition of honoring loved ones who have passed away. The doll was designed by Mexican-American doll designer Javier Meabe, who also designed the first Da de Muertos doll and the Jurassic Park Claire doll. Meabe said he made sure to stay true to the tradition by adding elements associated with the holiday, such as marigold flowers, the skeletal elements and the traditional calavera design. The doll comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and is priced at $75.
