Texans sign USFL Panthers quarterback E.J. Perry, Adam Humphries, release Xazavian Valladay, Kendall Sheffield

Former Brown University quarterback was with team this offseason before being waived

HOUSTON – The Texans are signing former Michigan Panthers quarterback E.J. Perry, according to league sources.

Perry was released from his USFL contract on Saturday, per a source.

The Texans later made it official and signed wide receiver Adam Humphries following a successful workout.

Humphries was previously with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans and the Washington Commanders. He has 320 career receptions for 3,314 yards and 13 touchdowns.

They released veteran cornerback Kendall Sheffield who had played sparingly and had a history of soft tissue injuries. They also released undrafted rookie running back Xazavian Valladay.

Valladay had been signed to an undrafted deal that includes $175,000 guaranteed with a $30,000 signing bonus and $145,000 of his base salary guaranteed. Valladay (6-foot, 201 pounds rushed for 1,192 yards and a Pac-12 Conference high 16 touchdowns last season with 289 receiving yards and two scores. A transfer from Wyoming, he rushed for 3,281 yards and 19 touchdowns before transferring to play for the Sun Devils.

Perry was previously with the team this offseason when he was claimed off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars before being released.

Perry is a former Brown University and Boston College quarterback who’s the nephew of former Texans receivers coach John Perry, who’s now coaching at Lamar University.

An Andover, Massachusetts native, Perry passed for 8,712 yards and 114 touchdowns in high school to rank second in state high school history.

He played for his uncle, James Perry, at Brown, and was an All-Ivy League selection after transferring from Boston College, passing for 2,948 yards and 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and rushed for 730 yards and eight touchdowns in 2020. He also played basketball for Brown. He was named the Ivy League’s top offensive player in 2021 as he passed for 3,033 yards and 23 touchdowns and 14 interceptions and rushed for 402 yards nad seven scores.

He played in the East-West Shrine all-star game and went undrafted. He was named the offensive MVP for the East-West game, completing 13 of 18 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for two two-point conversions.

He agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles before eventually signing with the Jaguars and was released and then re-signed. He was signed to a reserve-future deal by Jacksonville on Jan. 23 before being waived.

Perry rushed for 48 yards and one touchdown for the Panthers and passed for 121 yards.
