The junior chose the Longhorns' program over Penn State, USC, Florida, Arizona State, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Auburn, and LSU. Winfield decided to commit last night after the Alabama national championship win over Ohio State.

Winfield mentioned his relationship with coach Andre Coleman. "[Coleman] has been recruiting me the hardest. I'm perfect with coach Coleman," said the Longhorn commit. On top of his relationship with Coleman, Winfield is excited about Steve Sarkisian joining Texas football- it's "the best thing that ever happened to Texas" according to Winfield. "As you can see what coach Sark did at Alabama, he knows how to get his guys the ball," Winfield added nodding towards the 52-24 Crimson Tide win Monday night.

Winfield helped lead the Farmers to a 7-4 record in the unprecedented 2020-2021 season of Texas high school football. Lewisville finished 2nd in the district with a 4-2 district record before being knocked out of the playoffs in a crushing 68-0 loss against Arlington Martin.

As a three-year varsity athlete, Winfield has totaled 1,414 career yards and 14 touchdowns. His best season statistically was his sophomore year when he brought in 58 receptions for 758 yards and 8 touchdowns. His junior season saw 30 receptions for 538 yards and four touchdowns.

It seemed unclear as to whether or not Winfield would pick Texas after Southlake Carroll 5-star quarterback Quinn Ewers re-opened his recruitment, but Winfield decided to stick with the Horns for now. Winfield and Memorial CB Jaylon Guilbeau are the only two athletes in the 2022 recruitment class to have committed to Texas football.
