First woman in 30 years to call Monday Night Football play-by-play

Beth Mowins to call game on Sept. 11

HOUSTON – ESPN's Beth Mowins is expected to become the first woman in 30 years to handle play-by-play duties during a regular-season NFL broadcast, according to Sports Illustrated's Richard Deitsch.

Mowins will call the Los Angels Chargers-Denver Broncos game on Sept. 11. It's the second game of the NFL's annual week one doubleheader on "Monday Night Football."

Mowins has called college football for ESPN for several years and has handled play calling for the Oakland Raiders' local preseason broadcasts for the last two seasons.

The only other woman to call NFL regular-season play-by-play was Gayle Sierens. She was on the call for an NBC telecast of the Seattle Seahawks-Kansas City Chiefs on the final Sunday of the 1987 season.
