This is the second silver the U.S. has earned in this event since London 2012, when the team debuted in the event.

The U.S. team, which is led by Hammer, a two-time 2012 Olympic silver medalist, finished second in qualifying and beat Australia in their first-round heat Friday morning to advance to the final.

The team made history last year by taking gold at the 2015 Worlds to become the first American team to win track cycling gold at a world championships.
