Suspects steal donations, electronics from Houston Humane Society

HOUSTON – Authorities are searching for suspects who broke into the Houston Humane Society early Tuesday.

Employees arrived to the shelter to find two TV monitors, the donation box and the cash box stolen, and more than $2,000 of damage to the glass front doors.

"Every dollar we have to replace is another dollar we can't put toward the animals," PR representative for the shelter, Monica Schmidt, said, adding that it could have been much worse.

Security footage shows the robbers attempting to enter the back of the shelter where the medication and veterinary equipment is stored. The robbers tried to open multiple doors leading to the expensive equipment, but all were securely locked.

Schmidt said many medications used for animals are the same as the ones that are used for humans. The only difference is the dosages.

Tuesday's incident was the first break-in to the Houston Humane Society since 2010 when several thousand dollars of equipment, none medical, was stolen from a maintenance shed.

Schmidt says this break-in, like the last, angered many of the shelter's employees.

"We dedicate our lives to these animals, and to know that someone would have the audacity to steal from homeless animals really upset the staff," she said.

The society has already replaced the front door and reassures that all of the animals are safe.
