Student riding bus had deactivated grenade

TEXAS CITY, Texas – A student riding to Don Jeter Elementary School in Rosharon on Wednesday had a deactivated grenade, according to the Alvin Independent School District.

Students were forced to evacuate the bus after the driver learned of the possible grenade. The Texas City Regional Bomb Squad inspected the grenade and reported it wasn't live.

"A technician from the Texas City Bomb Squad recovered the device and determined that the core had been removed and was not capable of detonation," said Alvin ISD Police Chief Mike Putnal.

A second bus took the students to Don Jeter Elementary.
