HOUSTON – The National Hurricane Center visited Houston to raise awareness about hurricane season by educating the public on one of its most important research tools.
The Noah WP-ED Orion turboprop, also known as "The Hurricane Hunter" was at Ellington Field today.
It's a critical tool the experts at the National Hurricane Center use to help us be prepared for the storm. Forecasters, local emergency management officials and disaster relief organizations were on hand to educate school kids on hurricanes and hurricane preparedness.
One of the main messages, even though 2013 was a quiet season, is that we can't let our guard down.
Rick Knabb, director of the National Hurricane Center weighed in:
"I'm confident, unfortunately to say, that next time we have a hurricane affecting southeast Texas, we're going to flood in places that we did not flood in Ike or in Allison," Knabb said. "So you got to treat the next storm or hurricane with as much respect as you would any hurricane or storm and not use the past events as a way to convince yourself you're not at risk. It only takes one storm to hit in the wrong place to create devastation."
