Man killed when small aircraft crashes near Tomball

NORTHWEST HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – One man was killed when a small aircraft crashed into some trees in an open field near Tomball Saturday morning.

The crash happened near Telge and Boudreaux Road about 11 a.m. The Texas Department of Public Safety said construction workers who saw the crash called 911.

The victim has been identified as 52-year-old Mark Gibson, of Magnolia, Texas.  He owned a hangar at the Dan Jones Airport, which is located near the crash site.

The aircraft is described as an ultralight, one-seater aircraft with three wheels.

"It's a tragedy any time a private pilot goes down," said Curtis Chapline, who also owns a hangar the airport.

He told Channel 2 he saw Gibson fly the plane several times and never thought there would be an issue.  He believes Gibson operated a small business in which he made parts of planes and sold them.

The FAA continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
