HPD: Suspect is mechanic for Houston Fire Department

HOUSTON – A police chase in northeast Harris County ended early Friday with a crash and an arrest of an employee for the Houston Fire Department, officials said.

The chase ended shortly after 12 a.m. at Eastland Street and Fields Street. It started on Schweikhardt Street and Providence Street outside of what Houston police called a "known drug house."

A Houston police officer was watching the home when he saw a man in a pickup truck talking with someone out front. The officer suspected a drug deal, and approached the pair, he said.

The driver sped off, investigators said. The officer then chased the truck for several miles.

Eventually spike strips were thrown out on North Wayside near the 610 Loop.

The truck rolled over the spikes and got two flat tires. However, the driver did not stop until he made it to Eastland Street and Fields, where he crashed into a ditch, officials said.

The driver was arrested. He was not seriously hurt.

Police said the suspect works as a mechanic for the Houston Fire Department. His name was not released.
