Rodeo Houston makes event more accessible to people with special needs, sensory sensitivities and the deaf community

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has three new additions to make the event more accessible to everyone.

SPECIAL BATHROOMS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS

Rodeo Houston has brought in Momentum Refresh, which is a bathroom with lifts and adult changing tables. This is made to help make using the restroom for kids and adults with special needs much easier.

Parents waiting in line to use Momentum Refresh told me they’d never come to the rodeo before because it’s too difficult when their child needs a bathroom. Without these special accommodations, they would normally have to leave the event or place their child on the ground of a public bathroom to change.

“That’s just not safe. This right here is awesome,” said one mother.

Momentum Refresh is located near the Ferris Wheel, right next to the Fun on the Farm activity.

SENSORY-FRIENDLY ROOM

If somebody in your family has sensory processing disorders, or maybe just feels overstimulated, go to guest services near section 133.

Guest Services 133 can provide you with a key to a quiet room in a sensory-friendly environment.

The best news is, this is a permanent room at NRG so it will be available to events year-round.

You can also rent sensory bags at guest services near these sections: 133, 113, 320, 347, 543, 517.

“Come in here, spend as much time or as little time as you need in this room, and you can kind of see all the different sensory objects in this room that they can enjoy,” said Holly Schweitzer, HLSR Director of Customer Experience.

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

“We are testing out live streaming of American Sign Language on the Rodeo Houston app,” Schweitzer said.

Everything is signed by an interpreter starting with the rodeo events and through the concert.
