Have you checked out your property tax bill this year? Texas homeowners are noticing big savings thanks to legislation passed by lawmakers and voters. Investigator Amy Davis explains what to look for on your bill.

No one ever really looks forward to getting a tax bill. But if you own a home, you should check yours out.

Big property tax savings for every homeowner in Texas

Last summer, Senator Paul Bettencourt told KPRC 2 Investigates that the bill he authored would save the average homeowner in Texas about $1,3000. We asked some of you to send us your bills so we could see if that was true.

Elected leaders in Austin voted for the largest property tax cut in our state’s history. They did it by taking $18 billion of the state’s surplus and giving it to Texas school districts so schools don’t need all that money from homeowners.

Here’s how the property tax savings look for real taxpayers in the Houston area.

New property tax bill cuts senior citizen’s tax bill

Out of the 5.7 million homeowners in Texas, those over 65 or disabled are seeing the biggest breaks.

Timbergrove = saved $1547.95 on his Houston ISD school taxes.

Klein ISD = paid $715.30 in 2022 and this year her school tax bill is zero.

Another 65-plus owner of a Galleria-area condo saw his school tax bill drop from $477 in 2022 to zero this year.

“The good news is this is not a mistake. This is your new low-tax bill. Enjoy it!” Senator Paul Bettencourt.

How can I check my property taxes in Texas?

If you’re wondering how much you’re paying in property taxes, there’s a way to check them online easily via state information that you can quickly filter down to your county. Check out this KPRC article.

We know most homeowners escrow their taxes and homeowner’s insurance so you never see your tax bill.

If you escrow and your monthly mortgage payment doesn’t go down this year then you should check your insurance premium. Those rates are going up and that may be why your monthly payment is not lower.
