Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting near Houston’s Fifth Ward

HOUSTON – A suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon near Houston’s Fifth Ward, according to the Houston Police Department.

A Crisis Intervention Team was requested for a welfare check at a home in the 400 block of Rouse Street around 1:30 p.m.

A man called police reporting that his brother was being erratic and threatening neighbors outside of his relative’s home. Officers were also told that the 46-year-old man was possibly on narcotics and drunk, police said. The man also said his brother had threatened him and the neighbors.

The suspect met officers at the front door of the home and threatened them, police said. They tried to deescalate the situation, but the man refused to listen.

The man reportedly went inside the home and officers followed behind him.

While inside, police said the suspect made threats to get his gun and shoot them. Officers deployed tasers to get him under control but they were ineffective.

While inside the kitchen, police said the man reached for something and Officer A. Alvarez discharged his weapon at the suspect and struck him multiple times.

Officers said they attempted to render aid, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

A school near the area was placed on lockdown until the scene was secured.

It is unknown if the suspect suffered from mental health issues. The suspect’s identity has not been released.
