Donors needed: Be The Match holds registration drive for 5-year-old who needs life-saving bone marrow transplant

5-year-old Nicholas Gonzalez is asking for one thing this Christmas: a matching bone marrow donor.

Nicholas was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia, a rare blood disorder. To cure it, he must find a bone marrow transplant.

“Be The Match,” a national organization, hosted a registry drive on Saturday to encourage and educate those in attendance on giving bone marrow.

“We’re just doing everything we can here to spread awareness and to get as many people as we can to register so they can be the hero,” said Marcos Gonzalez, father of Nicholas.

According to a news release, Hispanics only have a 48% chance of finding their life-saving donor for a bone marrow transplant.

To become a bone marrow donor, donors must be between 18 and 40 years old.
