Chemical plant evacuated after fire

HOUSTON – An evacuation was ordered after a fire broke out at a Deer Park chemical plant on Monday.

The incident happened at the Dow Chemical plant in the 1900 block of Tidal Road near Old Battleground Road about 11:25 a.m. Officials have not said what was burning.

The plant issued a level one fire evacuation for the facility. KPRC Local 2 is awaiting confirmation of exactly what that entails.

No evacuations or shelter in places have been ordered for the general public.

According to Dow's website, there are eight production areas that operate as separate facilities within the 900-acre plant. Specialty chemicals, including methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, amines and various acrylates are manufactured at the site. Some of the chemicals are used in a variety of products, including paints, detergents, floor care products, adhesives, sealants, automotive coatings, acrylic plastics, personal care items and water purification chemicals.

The plant employs about 700 people.
