Car smashes into school bus carrying high school students, causes rollover in Alief

HOUSTON – Emergency crews were on the scene after an Alief ISD school bus carrying Hastings High School students was involved in a rollover accident Friday afternoon.

The bus driver is recovering at a local hospital after she was involved in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down the intersection at Sugarland Howell and Empanada.

According to officers, just before 1 p.m. Friday the bus driver was stopped at a red light waiting to turn into Alief Taylor High School. She was scheduled to drop off two Hastings High School students who were on board, but before she could pull into the driveway the driver of a silver Mercedes plowed into the back of the bus with so much force that the bus carrying the driver and the two teens toppled over.

"Fortunately for us they were not injured. The driver was taken to the hospital, but she was cautious and alert and she was talking," said Alief ISD spokesperson Craig Eichhorn.

Several witnesses stopped to help. Moments after the bus hit the ground, the driver of another vehicle hit the front end.

"The third vehicle involved happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time," said Eichhorn.

That driver was taken to the hospital in the back of an ambulance.

The driver of the Mercedes was taken downtown in the back of a patrol car. Officers tell Local 2 the driver of the Mercedes was definitely speeding.

Both drivers who were taken to the hospital are expected to be OK.
