HOUSTON – A man was hospitalized Saturday after a deputy-involved shooting in northeast Harris County, officials said.
The shooting was reported around 5:45 p.m. in the 13600 block of Reeveston Road where a pool party was being held.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the shooting stemmed from a disturbance call.
“The male came because there was a woman that he was having a relationship with, either wife, girlfriend, we don’t know that yet, was at this party, and he wanted to confront her,” Gonzalez said. “And he came heavily armed.”
Deputies said the man’s intent was to find the woman at the party while holding an assault rifle.
Gonzalez said when deputies told the man, identified as Eric Briggs, 26, to drop his weapon, he pointed the firearm toward a deputy and another deputy shot him.
“This could have really been a bad situation considering the number of people and when you consider he was armed with an AK-47,” Gonzalez said.
The weapon was retrieved by deputies.
Officials said Briggs was taken to a local hospital, with nonlife-threatening injuries. No deputies were injured.
