Gas leak prompts evacuation in Bellaire neighborhood

HOUSTON – A gas leak Sunday prompted concern for residents in a Bellaire neighborhood.

The chemical leak was reported at 1:13 p.m. in the 7900 block of Ferris Drive. Officials said a box truck was gushing diesel in the parking lot of Veritas Christian Academy of Houston.

Officials said a truck leaked diesel onto the street, causing a smell.

Residents like Arturo Rodriquez told KPRC2 that the chemical smelled like acetone and oil. Rodriquez called police and recorded the leak on his cell phone.

“I was backing up to my house and noticed something was wet on the street and I told my wife this can’t be water,” Rodriquez said.

Bellaire and Houston Fire Departments put down booms and sandlike materials to stop the fuel from spreading to nearby sewers and drains.

No injuries were reported.
