HOUSON – If you think menopause is boring or a taboo subject, you likely haven’t seen one of Barbara Taylor’s YouTube videos.
"I make props and models. I make it fun -- you're laughing while you're learning. And when you laugh and learn, you remember it,” Taylor said.
Taylor is a former obstetrician and gynecologist who retired from her Houston practice, but has dedicated the past few years to educating women about one of the most important chapters of their lives.
"Women are totally and woefully unprepared for menopause,” Taylor said. “It's really not about hot flashes -- it's about heart attack, it's about osteoporosis, it's about Alzheimer’s."
When Taylor discovered that few women had accurate and accessible information about what to expect during menopause, she published her own book, "Menopause: Your Management Your Way … Now and for the Rest of Your Life."
But even after writing a book and teaching hours-long seminars, Taylor knew she wanted to share her message with an even larger audience.
In 2016, she started her own YouTube channel, where she is affectionately known as “Menopause Barbie” or “Menopause Taylor.”
"Her YouTubes are just incredible. I laugh my head off every time I see them,” said Linda Rogers, a client and friend of Taylor.
The videos range in subject matter from diet to exercise to hormones and relationship health -- with Taylor at the center, donning elaborate hats and costumes, or turning cookware into props she can use to explain biological processes in the human body.
"I will do whatever it takes, I will be as goofy as I have to be. I will do anything to make sure you understand. Because my goal is to revolutionize the way the world deals with menopause and make it this topic people are comfortable with," Taylor said.
Taylor boasts more than 10,000 subscribers, with women all over the world commenting on and sharing her videos.
