Controversial high school hairstyle ban suspended

LOUISVILLE, KY – Butler Traditional High School in Louisville has drawn criticism after their hair policy came to light which banned cornrows, dreadlocks, and twists.

Outraged parents attended a school meeting Friday, hoping to voice their criticism, but the meeting only lasted a few minutes as the council decided to suspend the policy without hearing from anyone in the crowd.

"That's our way of life. Because if I don't have my twists, if I don't have my cornrows, if I don't have my hair braided, then I get complaints from the kid behind me that he can't see," student Shayla Ford says.

Thirty-five percent of students at Butler are African-American.

Parents insist this policy was an act of discrimination.

"We want to make sure we get this right," Butler principal William Allen said. "I think it's important for us, moving forward, to make sure we take an open, honest look at this policy."

When classes start this month, students will be able to wear their hair however they want.
