Convicted murderer makes Top 10 Most Wanted list after escaping Texas prison

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Department of Public Safety has added a convicted murderer to the Texas 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list.

Jose Fernando Bustos-Diaz, 27, is wanted for escape and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Texas officials said he escaped from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Briscoe Unit in Dilley on April 6, 2010. He is believed to have fled to Mexico, investigators said.

Investigators said Bustos-Diaz pleaded guilty in 2005 to a murder he committed while working as a ranch hand in Harris County. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison as a result, authorities said.

Authorities described Bustos-Diaz as being 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 195 pounds. Investigators said he has heavy acne scarring on his face and birthmarks on his chest.

Officials said he also has several tattoos including a heart with a religious cross on the webbing part of his left hand, the name “Vanessa” with one dot on the inside of his left wrist, and the name “Lizeth” on the inside of his right wrist.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Bustos-Diaz is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477). Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for useful information.
