DEWEYVILLE, Texas – Students in a Southeast Texas district where flooding inundated much of the town won't return to school until next month.
Deweyville Independent School District Superintendent Kevin Clark said Sunday that April 11 is the target date for school to resume.
Early March rainstorms and releases from the Toledo Bend Reservoir led to flooding of the Sabine River. Much of nearby Deweyville, a town of about 1,000, was evacuated March 12 amid disastrous floods.
The district's more than 600 students have been off since March 11. The following week was spring break.
Clark says he used a boat to check the elementary school, where the water inside was 4 feet deep. All classes, for now, will be in the junior-senior high building.
Trustees hold a special school board meeting Monday night.
